AI design slop: why your page looks like every other AI-built site
By Caleb Gross · Updated · Based on Jev AI scores of 119 pages
Short answer
Generic AI-built pages share the same gradients, blobs and card grids. Replace decoration with real product screenshots, one brand color, consistent styles and specific copy.
AI site builders make it easy to ship a decent-looking page fast, but they tend to produce the same page: purple-to-blue gradients, glowing blobs, emoji or generic icons, three identical feature cards, and stock phrases. Visitors have seen it hundreds of times.

Why it matters
When your page looks like a template, visitors assume the product is one too. A distinct, consistent design signals that a real team made deliberate choices, which helps both design and trust.
Signs your page has this problem
- A purple or blue gradient hero with a glowing orb behind the headline.
- Rows of identical cards, each with an emoji or generic icon and two lines of text.
- Mixed styles: different corner radii, shadows and button shapes on the same page.
- Illustrations or 3D shapes instead of your actual product.
- Copy full of “Unlock”, “Elevate”, “Seamless” and “Supercharge”.
How to fix it
- 1
Show the real product
Replace abstract art with real screenshots or a short demo. It's the most distinctive thing you have.
- 2
Pick one accent color and stick to it
One brand color for buttons and highlights, neutrals for everything else.
- 3
Set a few rules and follow them
One corner radius, one shadow style, two font sizes for body text, consistent spacing.
- 4
Break the card grid
Give your most important feature a large, full-width section with a real screenshot instead of another identical card.
- 5
Rewrite the stock copy
Generic layouts usually come with generic words. Specific copy makes even a simple design feel custom.
How to prompt AI builders for better design
Give the tool constraints: your brand color, a reference site you like, “no gradients or glowing effects”, “use real screenshots I provide”, “one font, max two weights”, “no emoji icons”. Then edit the result by hand. AI is a great first draft, not a finished page.
Add one memorable element
Distinct pages usually have one thing you remember: a bold color, an interactive demo, a custom illustration style, a founder's handwritten note, or an unusual layout. Pick one and do it well instead of adding decoration everywhere.
Checklist
- Real product shown instead of abstract art
- One accent color
- Consistent corners, shadows and spacing
- No emoji icons in feature cards

Questions
How do I make an AI-generated website look less generic?
Use real product screenshots, one consistent accent color, consistent spacing and corner styles, and specific copy. Remove decorative gradients and emoji icons that don't add meaning.
Is it bad to build my landing page with AI?
No. It's a fast way to start. The problem is shipping the default output unchanged. Edit it until it reflects your product and brand.
